What is happening in Myanmar?

A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake has devastated Myanmar. Please send aid now.

What is happening in Myanmar?

On 28 March, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing significant damage. The epicentre was close to Mandalay city. A 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed in the same area.

Rescue operations are underway. More than 2000 people are dead, with thousands more injured. The de facto authorities have requested international aid and declared a State of Emergency in six regions.

Around 15 million people across the country have been affected by the quake, including many families already uprooted by conflict.

“The earthquake struck an area already hosting the largest number of displaced people in the country, so the needs are vast,” says Noriko Takagi, UNHCR Representative to Myanmar.

"Many have lost their homes and their loved ones. Please stand with the people of Myanmar in their time of need. Your contribution, no matter the size, will bring hope and help us provide critical support.”

The earthquake also impacted Thailand, including Bangkok, where injuries and deaths have been reported.

What was the humanitarian situation like in Myanmar before the quakes?

The central and north-west parts of Myanmar, where the earthquake struck, are home to the highest number of internally displaced people in the country – 1.6 million out of a total 3.5 million.

Since the military takeover in February 2021, the political and security landscape in Myanmar has plunged millions into a deepening humanitarian crisis. People continue to face serious challenges, including human rights violations and rising poverty. Some have been forced to flee again and again.

How is UNHCR helping Myanmar earthquake survivors?

UNHCR’s team in Mandalay has been on the ground since the earthquake struck, working tirelessly to help survivors.

Brave responders embarked on a 13-hour journey to Mandalay to join their colleagues on the frontlines. UNHCR also dispatched two trucks with family tents and other supplies to Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw.
